Gary Kennedy Fine Art
Light and shadow are very important elements of my paintings.
I like to paint large paintings so I can give the viewer appreciation of depth and composition.
I love how people are literally drawn to the canvas.

GARY KENNEDY

I have deep roots in Newfoundland, being born and raised in Port de Grave, Newfoundland and Labrador. I developed my personal style not through any formal training but through the influence of George Noseworthy, an American artist who moved to Port de Grave to pursue his own work. Noseworthy provided the necessary materials, encouraged the local kids to express themselves through painting, and donated countless hours to guiding their artistic education by critiquing the output of these aspiring artists. I was photographed in 1970, along with one of my paintings for an article in TIME magazine featuring George Noseworthy and was considered to be his most promising protégé.

In 1971, I met artist Ann Meredith Barry, artist-in-residence, at the Hibb’s Hole Art School founded by George Noseworthy. She introduced me to silk screen printing. In 1972, I met Ron Bolt, artist-in-residence.

I became a full-time artist in 1984.
My serigraphs completed from 1984 to 2000 are biographical artistic expressions of my childhood that celebrates life growing up in a Newfoundland outport. These serigraphs have been executed using millions of dots, done one at a time similar to pointillism. I used three primary colors, yellow, blue and red overlaid to achieve the final result.

Since 1999 I have worked in the medium of oil-on-canvas and some of the paintings completed have found their way into private and corporate collections. I had a solo exhibition in October of 2001 of landscape paintings entitled Seasons in the Park, depicting scenes of Bowring Park in St. John’s, Newfoundland. These paintings have also been completed using a technique of thousands of brush strokes. The emphasis is composition and the effects of light and color.

In 2004, I had another solo exhibition entitled Moments in Time which included paintings such as Back Cove depicting a scene of the rugged Newfoundland coastline. In addition to other paintings such as The Lighthouse Cleaners and The Fishermen of Hibbs Hole. Both of these exhibitions took place at The Christopher Pratt Gallery, Bay Roberts, Newfoundland and Labrador.
In April/May 2004 my painting titled Bridge over South Brook was featured full page in International Artist Magazine.

My paintings can be found in private collections in Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, Norway and the United States.
